Quarantine Diaries: Life in an Airstream
In some ways it feels like the world has frozen in time during quarantine. People have stopped where they are at and stayed still. Not everyone is at “home”, though. There are many people who have shaped their lives around travel and they, like many others, have had to find a way to adapt. We are sharing a few stories over the next week of people whose lifestyles and careers center around travel, but are now staying still.
Our first feature is Jake and Kait - two entrepreneurs living in a renovated Airstream. It had always been on Kait’s Bucket List to live in an Airstream, so when she saw one on Craigslist for super cheap, they went to check it out. They came home that night owners of an airstream. One month later they had quit their jobs, packed up their apartment, and moved to Indiana (with fam) to start the renovation.
“When I found the listing for our eventual Airstream, I convinced Jacob to “just go look at it” when we were visiting family nearby. By the end of the day, we were driving it to my grandma’s house to store until we figured a few (a lot of) things out. Buying the Airstream was a huge jump, but the listing price was so low that we figured we could always sell it and make money off it if we changed our minds. To keep the story short, within a month, we both ended up quitting our jobs and had moved to Indiana to begin the renovation. “
When quarantine began, Jake was on his way to Europe for work as a traveling film producer. He cancelled plans and flights and now, both Kait and Jake are settling into Airstream life in San Diego where they will be based for the foreseeable future. For Kait, quarantine has put a pause on travel plans and freelance work.
“It’s forced me to be content and find new ways to fill my time. It’s definitely made me slow down, which is hard for me to do.”
This new found time has helped Jake hone in on goals that he hadn’t been able to focus on because of his busy travel schedule.
