Hiking the Zion Narrows: Quick & Dirty Guide
The Narrows is an iconic and stunning hike that weaves its way through Zion National Park. It’s a must-do for many because the trail takes you through the Virgin River. That’s right, you’re walking in the water. On either side, immense rock faces shade the river—2,000 feet of vibrant red rock that towers over you. At its narrowest point, the canyon walls come so close you can spread your arms and touch both sides. Almost the entire hike is in the Virgin River. Some days, the water goes up to your chest. Walking in water is what makes the hike so novel and unique.
Zion Canyon was formed by the Virgin River, a tributary of the Colorado River. The Narrows received its name because it is the narrowest part of the river that runs through the park. The Virgin cut away at the rock layers over time, creating the incredible rock formations and canyons we see in the park today.
